Chapter 01

Bangkok

กรุงเทพมหานคร

12 June 13.75° N · 100.50° E

A heavy-skied afternoon in the capital. A slow lap of the lake at Benjakitti Park, then across the city to Wat Pho, where even the flattest light finds something to catch on.

Benjakitti Park. The skyline sitting low over the lake, iced coffee in hand.

Wat Pho · วัดโพธิ์

The Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Ninety-one chedis, every one of them dressed in hand-set ceramic flowers, gables that flick up into gilded flames, and painted doors taller than both of us put together.

Bangkok

Look up

The Reclining Buddha — forty-six metres of gold leaf.

The painted doors

Every doorway at Wat Pho is a frame — lacquer red, gold leaf, flowers within flowers. We spent far longer than we meant to in a single one of them.

Hide and seek in the painted doorways.
Every surface asked to be looked at twice.
Afternoon offerings.
Traditional dress in the courtyards.

By tuk-tuk through the evening traffic.

Chapter 02

Khao Sok

เขาสก

14 — 15 June 8.91° N · 98.53° E

From the city to one of the oldest rainforests on earth. Our lodge sat at the foot of the limestone, thatched roofs half-swallowed by palms and elephant ears.

Dusk under the canopy

Evening comes early in the jungle. The light goes green and soft, the cicadas take over, and the path between the bungalows turns into a tunnel of palms.

Limestone walls behind the lodge, palms against the last of the sky.
Lights on at the lodge.

Cheow Lan Lake · เขื่อนเชี่ยวหลาน

Next morning, a longtail out across Cheow Lan — a valley flooded in the 1980s, now 165 square kilometres of jade water threaded between towers of karst.

Out across the lake by longtail.
Paddling out from the raft houses.
Paddling out from the raft houses.
The water really is that colour.

Khao Sok

Into the karst

The lakeshore, where the water has pulled back from the old valley floor.

Chapter 03

Koh Tao

เกาะเต่า

16 — 17 June 10.10° N · 99.84° E

Turtle Island. Across the Gulf, a scooter, and a cove of glassy green water where we spent the afternoon doing very little at all.

Under the surface, just off the beach.
Bungalows climbing the hill above the bay.

Golden hour · พระอาทิตย์ตก

Then the sky did the thing it does in the Gulf: lilac, then rose, then a slow burn of gold behind the longtails.

Last light

We stayed in the water until the boats were silhouettes, and then a while longer.

Scooter home at sunset.
Night swim. String lights doubling in the water.

Beneath · ใต้ทะเล

The next morning we went under — a dive with Big Blue, bubbles rising past the mooring line and the reef opening up below.

Company on the reef.
Company on the reef.
Coral gardens off Koh Tao.
Beach bars on the rocks, and beanbags on the sand after dark.

Chapter 04

Koh Samui

เกาะสมุย

18 June 9.51° N · 100.01° E

An afternoon with elephants — watermelon offered at arm's length, and trunks far softer and more curious than we expected.

Feeding time. Watermelon, very politely accepted.
Eyelashes.

Gentle giants

They move slowly, then all at once — a trunk curling around a palm frond, a flap of an ear, a quiet rumble you feel more than hear.

Making friends.

Koh Samui

The herd

And then the sea again

We finished the day on a jet ski, chasing the sun down over the water.

Sunset, at speed.

Chapter 05

Ang Thong

หมู่เกาะอ่างทอง

19 June 9.62° N · 99.68° E

Forty-two islands scattered across the Gulf, and a steep, rope-railed climb to see them all at once.

Up — roots, rocks and rope.
And then, all at once, the view.

Marine park

Ang Thong means 'golden bowl'. From the top you can see why: a ring of green islands holding a lagoon the colour of jade.

White sand at the foot of the climb.

แล้วพบกันใหม่

Until next time.
